Saint Michael’s Staff Rallies to Help Earthquake-ravaged Haiti NEWARK, N. J. (February 16, 2010) –– The recent tragedy in Haiti hit close to home at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, where several employees suffered devastating losses — and the hospital staff rallied to raise money and awareness. In Newark, pastoral care staff provided emotional and spiritual support to employees who lost love ones in the quake, or who worried about injured or homeless family members in Haiti. In the week before Valentine’s Day, the hospital staff created the Hearts for Haiti fundraiser. Employees at festively decorated tables in the lobby, Café, and cafeteria sold red, white, and pink carnations to colleagues, patients, and visitors. Proceeds raised at the event will benefit not only Global Health Ministry, but also employees directly affected by the earthquake. In the coming weeks and months, as relief efforts in Haiti continue and rebuilding begins, Saint Michael’s will continue to work with Global Health Ministry in providing resources and personnel where needed. Established by the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in 1867, Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a 357-bed regional tertiary-care, teaching and research center in the heart of Newark’s business and educational district. Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a member of Catholic Health East (CHE). Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Catholic Health East is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, with 34 hospitals in 11 states. More information is available at www.smmcnj.org..
