Saint James Campus to Offer Free Men’s Health Screening

NEWARK, N.J. (June 6, 2008) — The Saint James Campus of Saint Michael’s Medical Center (SMMC), located at 155 Jefferson Street in Newark’s Ironbound community, will offer free men’s health screenings on Saturday, June 28, 2008, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Prostate and colorectal cancer screenings will be performed by Karim Karim, M.D., director of SMMC’s Family Care Center. Blood pressure screening will also be available, as will referrals for any needed follow-up care at SMMC.

In addition, certified HIV counselors associated with SMMC’s Peter Ho Memorial Clinic, one of the state’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS clinics, will be on hand to administer non-invasive rapid HIV tests, provide onsite counseling services, and make referrals for follow-up testing or treatment as needed. Results of the rapid HIV tests are available within 20 minutes. Preliminary positive results are communicated immediately, but confirmation of these results must be obtained from a virology lab.

The Saint James Campus hosts free onsite health events every month. Those interested in receiving more information about this and future events can call (973) 877-5621.
