The Heart and Vascular Institute at Saint Michael’s Medical Center provides comprehensive, innovative cardiovascular services of unsurpassed quality. Encompassing a continuum of care — from advanced diagnostic testing and evaluation to angioplasty, from pacemaker and defibrillator implantations to beating-heart and minimally invasive surgeries — the Institute builds upon six decades of leadership in cardiac care.

The members of the multidisciplinary team at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Saint Michael’s Medical Center are committed to providing the very best in cardiovascular services.

At the forefront of cardiac innovation since it opened New Jersey’s first specialty center for the study and treatment of cardiac disease in 1937, Saint Michael’s Medical Center established the state’s first cardiac catheterization lab in 1949. Doctors at the hospital performed the state’s first open-heart surgery in 1959, the first coronary bypass procedure in 1967, and the first coronary angioplasty in New Jersey in 1981. Today, Saint Michael’s Medical Center is New Jersey’s only approved CREST site — one of 85 centers throughout North America chosen to participate in the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial — and a participant in the international, multi-institutional FREEDOM Trial investigating coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) vs. drug-eluting stent procedures in diabetic patients. A collaboration between Cardiology and Vascular Surgery, the carotid stenting program has handled more than 200 cases.

Under the direction of Mark W. Connolly, M.D., chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, the Heart and Vascular Institute offers the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures available. The Institute’s state-of-the-art cardiac care unit and multidisciplinary team of board-certified specialists — including cardiologists, cardiovascular anesthesiologists, critical-care intensivists, perfusionists, physical assistants, nurse practitioners, registered cardiovascular nurses, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers, and others — work closely with surgeons to provide the highest level of care in every phase of each patient’s surgery and recovery.

The Heart and Vascular Institute features an accredited non-invasive vascular laboratory — one of only two in the state approved not only for routine imaging studies but also for visceral and abdominal vascular imaging. The Institute leads the state in the annual volume of beating-heart surgeries, performing more than 600 a year. Dr. Connolly has pioneered a number of new procedures, including minimally invasive heart surgery, valve repair in lieu of valve replacement, endoscopic radial artery and vein harvesting, and ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Other innovations include minimally invasive catheter-based endovascular techniques for the care of abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid occlusive disease, and peripheral vascular disease.
