The Heart and Vascular Institute at Saint Michael’s Medical Center provides comprehensive, innovative cardiovascular services of unsurpassed quality. Encompassing a continuum of care — from advanced diagnostic testing and evaluation to angioplasty, from pacemaker and defibrillator implantations to beating-heart and minimally invasive surgeries — the Institute builds upon six decades of leadership in cardiac care.
The Heart and Vascular Institute offers the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures available. The Institute’s state-of-the-art cardiac care unit and multidisciplinary team of board-certified specialists — including cardiologists, cardiovascular anesthesiologists, critical-care intensivists, perfusionists, physical assistants, nurse practitioners, registered cardiovascular nurses, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers, and others — work closely with surgeons to provide the highest level of care in every phase of each patient’s surgery and recovery. The Heart and Vascular Institute features an accredited non-invasive vascular laboratory — one of only two in the state approved not only for routine imaging studies but also for visceral and abdominal vascular imaging. The Institute leads the state in the annual volume of beating-heart surgeries, performing more than 600 a year, and its physicians have pioneered a number of new procedures, including minimally invasive heart surgery, valve repair in lieu of valve replacement, endoscopic radial artery and vein harvesting, and ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Other innovations include minimally invasive catheter-based endovascular techniques for the care of abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid occlusive disease, and peripheral vascular disease.
