Saint Michael’s to Offer Free Educational Seminar for People with Knee Pain

NEWARK, N. J. (January 4, 2011) –– Dr. Richard Boiardo, chief of Orthopedics at Saint Michael’s Medical Center and the first New Jersey surgeon to offer robotic knee surgery, will present a free educational seminar to answer questions about this cutting-edge surgical technology.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel, located at 500 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken.  Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions, and free refreshments will be provided.  Space is limited; to reserve a seat, call (877) ST MIKE 4 ME — (877) 786-4534.

Robotic-arm assisted orthopedic surgery, also known as MAKOplasty, offers a new treatment option for patients with knee pain.  The less invasive procedure allows patients with early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis to gain relief without having to undergo a total knee replacement.  By precisely targeting only the damaged portion of the knee, the surgeon can preserve healthy ligaments and tissue for a more natural feel to the knee — resulting in less discomfort, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to daily activities.

“This is the most dramatic development in joint surgery in the past 30 years,” said Dr. Boiardo.

Established by the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in 1867, Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a 357-bed regional tertiary-care, teaching, and research center in the heart of Newark’s business and educational district.  Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a member of Catholic Health East.  Based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Catholic Health East is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, with 34 hospitals in 11 states.  More information is available at www.smmcnj.org.
