Saint Michael's Medical Center Recruits Top Orthopedic Surgeon

Richard Boiardo, M.D.
Chief of Orthopedics

NEWARK, N.J.
Saint Michael’s Medical Center has announced the recruitment of Dr. Richard Boiardo, a highly respected, internationally known orthopedic surgeon, to the position of Chief of Orthopedics. With the addition of Dr. Boiardo to its medical staff, the 357-bed teaching hospital — renowned for its state-of-the-art cardiac and cancer care services — is poised to build one of the region’s leading centers of excellence for joint replacement, arthritic surgery, sports medicine, and general orthopedic care.

Dr. Boiardo, who maintains a practice on Northfield Avenue in West Orange, graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University and received his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He did residencies at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, New York, and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed two post-graduate orthopedic fellowships at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, and at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California.

He has served as the chief of the Department of Orthopedics at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus and chief of the Department of Orthopedics at University Hospital in Hoboken, where the joint replacement program he developed in 2000 has received a five-star Health Grades rating. He also served as chief of Joint Replacement at Cabrini Medical Center in New York and as chief of the Department of Sports Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Boiardo is a founding member of the Association for Arthritic Hip and Knee Surgery. He is also a member of the Essex County Medical Society; the New Jersey Medical Society; the Dorr Surgical Society; the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and the American Society for Sports Medicine. His professional sports team experience has included past work with the New York Jets Football Club and many other teams. He has also been the team physician for the Newark Bears Baseball Club since its inception in 1999.

Dr. Boiardo has been extensively published in peer-reviewed journals, and enjoys international renown as a speaker on the latest medical advances in his field. Recent speaking engagements have included talks for the Spanish Hip and Knee Society at the Universidad de Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain; the Greek Hip and Knee Society in Larissa, Greece; and lectures on the topic of advances in anthroplasty in St. Petersburg, Russia and Charlotte, South Carolina.

“We are delighted to announce the addition of Dr. Boiardo to the medical staff,” said Robert H. Evans, the hospital’s chief executive officer. “His vast expertise in the field of orthopedics — and his unparalleled experience as a surgeon — will bring a new level of clinical excellence to the medical care provided at Saint Michael’s Medical Center.”

Established by the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in 1867, Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a 357-bed regional tertiary-care, teaching and research center in the heart of Newark’s business and educational district.
